How defacing your mirror can help you achieve your goals!

September 29, 2011

I’m a big believer in the power of visualisation. Bombarding your consciousness with an image for long enough generally sees it come to fruition, somehow.

This isn’t especially woo-woo or mystical; it’s merely the product of a few universal truths.

  • Your beliefs become your reality → everything you see, hear, smell, touch is a product of your own perception. Believe something fiercely enough, and it becomes ‘true’. Perhaps only in your mind, but hell, the universe lives inside us all.
  • When your brain encounters an idea or problem, it automatically tries to ‘solve’ it → by placing images of what you desire in constant view, your cranium (in it’s tirelessly helpful way) tries to find ways to bring them into being. It’s hardwired this way. Like in a hedge-maze, it scurries around attempting to locate the quickest route to the prize. Hey presto! You suddenly, effortlessly find the flow.
  • The act of speaking or writing is essentially an act of creation → by using your energy to draw a picture of that diploma you are studying so hard for, or carefully tracing the numbers that spell out your financial goals, you are physically ‘creating’ an energetic imprint. (This is also why the words you speak have so much power and you should strive to choose them carefully, but we’ll save that for another hippie lecture). Start the ball rolling and physically manifest your goals, if only in written form for now.

(So that was a little mystical. Apologies. Expect any less?)

How then do we put this knowledge into practise?

A highly motivated, go-getting, jet-setting, ass-kicking fitness model friend of mine, Claire, recently shared a beautiful technique she personally uses for keeping goals in her face, front and centre, at all times.

Got mirrors?

Deface ‘em. Scribble all over them. Make a beautiful artwork using washable wet-chalk pens and emblazon your goals on every shiny surface as a 24/7 motivational reminder.

Here’s one I prepared earlier!

I actually got a childish kick from drawing all over such an unconventional canvas – admittedly, my original artwork (aided by two giggling flatmates) included many, er, gender-specific appendages. You can read between the legs, lines. It was a necessary initiation. And i’m 12.

The whole JUST DO IT thing is pretty much my mantra; it’s a shame it was coined by such an evil clothing empire. Needless to say, in the past few weeks when I’ve felt particularly apathetic and lazy, the monstrous pep talk facing me from my floor-length mirrors has given me just the kick in the pants i’ve needed.

I also included a list of  skills I want to work on, ideas for the blog, random quotes, and an over-arching to-do list that has every fanciful goal I could think of. Becoming BFF’s with the Dalai Llama is scheduled for 2014.

I also drew a big iridology map for practise (I’ll talk more about Iris signs & the philosophy behind it in another post) and have delighted in doodling whatever comes to mind. Sometimes, that’s doodles.

So tell me, have you got any quirky tips for visualising your dreams? Are you digging the mirror idea?

I’ll leave you with a thought for the day:

Glad you like it – drawing all over random household services feels super rebellious!
